Walmart has entered the contest to grab consumers looking for organics and local produce. But how does it compare to Whole Foods, the arguable leader of the segment? Cory Krummer writes an interesting piece in the Atlantic about Walmart’s entry into the local/organic market, including a one-to-one shopping comparison and taste test. (Uh, local produce was comparable in price, other stuff was less at Walmart; taste test results were split.) While I’m skeptical of some of his conclusions and I doubt the good intentions of Walmart, this article is worth the read. At the very least, Walmart will help bring local and organic food to the general population.
